On Wednesday, August 1, 2012, I was transported back to a time when two artists were just starting out on their path to a legendary career! It was the late 1960s/early 1970s when Bette Midler and Barry Manilow met in the famous Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse that featured a disco dance floor, a cabaret lounge, sauna rooms, an Olympic “blue” swimming pool, and could serve nearly 1,000 men 24 hours a day.

Donna Maxon has been known for over 20 years as one of the world’s foremost Bette Midler tribute artists.Donna has appeared on numerous television shows including “Saturday Night Live,” The Wayne Brady Show,” “Celebrity Apprentice,”and “One Life to Live” and continues to perform in such celebrated venues as the Borgata, Trump’s, Harrah’s, and Foxwoods. In addition to her work as a performer Donna is an author and activist, and is currently serving as president of the Council on the Arts and Humanities of Staten Island.

Inside out photos 7-6-2012TOP PERFORMER: Local diva, Donna Maxon, was honored to perform at the 102nd Travis July 4th Parade. She performed patriotic tunes like, “This Land is Your Land,” and more contemporary tunes like, Miley Cyrus’, “Party in the USA.” She also sang the classic “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” which she dedicated to the veterans. God Bless America!

Enjoying Spring

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – As Islanders have known for years, the world has at least two Divine Miss Ms: One is Bette Midler. The other is a her doppelganger, singer/writer/comedian/actress/tribute artist and red-headed woman-about-town Donna Maxon.

Ask anybody about great but gone music venues in New York, and they’ll go on and on about CBGB, the Fillmore East, Max’s Kansas City and the Savoy Ballroom.
But the Continental Baths? Though it hosted artists as diverse as the New York Dolls, Patti LaBelle and the Manhattan Transfer, it usually goes unmentioned.
Probably because it was a gay bathhouse.
Down in the basement of what was then the Ansonia Hotel, on Broadway and 73rd Street, the Continental teemed with activity — musical and otherwise — from 1968 to 1974.
Its most famous act was a red-haired firecracker named Bette Midler — backed by a young, unknown pianist named Barry Manilow.
